Collection Historical Note

Mae Wynne McFarland was born in Huntsville, Texas to Gustavus Adair Wynne and Samuella Gibbs in September 1884. The Wynne and Gibbs families helped build Huntsville.  Later, she attended the University of Texas where she became a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.  On April 14, 1914 Mae Wynne married Ike B. McFarland.

Mrs. McFarland participated in many patriotic societies and is credited with persuading the Texas Legislature to outlaw the cutting of wild flowers from roadsides.  She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and the Colonial Dames.  She held national offices in the Daughters of 1812 and the Daughters of the Founders and Patriots of America, and was the only woman to head the Texas chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy as well as the Daughters of 1812, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. On March 3, 1916, she founded the Mary Martin Elmore Scott Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution located in Huntsville, Texas.  She is also credited with helping to organize the President Houston Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas of Huntsville in 1935.

Also a member of the Harris County Historical Society, Mrs. McFarland focused her studies on Walker County, Texas.  Her largest area of research concerns the War of 1812.  War of 1812 Veterans in Texas by Mary Smith Fay was made possible by notes compiled by Mrs. McFarland.

In January of 1962, Mae Wynne McFarland passed away in a Houston hospital due to illness.  She was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Huntsville, Texas.
