Extent: 1.0 Boxes

Arrangement:

The Britton Hispanic Texana Collection is housed in one (1) flat archival box which is located in an archival fire safe. This collection is arranged in chronological order and includes items dated between 1546 and 1877. This is a created collection, purchased and donated by James L. Britton, III.

The “SHH #” is a unique code containing bracketed letters and numbers that follow the organizational pattern set during a grant funded digitization project called Texas Tides.  The first letters in the brackets represent Sam Houston State University and are followed by the item’s identifying sequence, often correlating to a collection or sub-collection as delineated during the Texas Tides digitization process as well as the item number. For example, in the SHH # structure here [SHH III:3], SHH indicates Sam Houston State University, III indicates the third sub-collection and 3 indicates the item number within sub-collection III.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection was purchased and donated by James L. Britton, III.

This collection contains an original manuscript from the era of the Spanish conquest in Spanish America in 1546.  The next item is from two hundred and fifty years later – a manuscript papal document (Pius VI) with tables of the church’s revenues and additional documentation from the government in Mexico. A Royal decree from Charles IV, along with proclamations from Viceroys, Commandants and the Emperor Augustin Iturbide broaden the perspective of the collection.  The collection’s chronological progression illustrates Mexico’s declaration of independence from Spain: a treaty between Spain and the U. S. regarding Texas, the fundamental law of Texas statehood as a part of Mexico, and numerous proclamations related to Texas’ struggle for independence from Mexico.  There is a collection of possible itineraries for General Woll’s invasion of Texas dated 1844, and other evidence of the preparation for war over Texas, a year prior to the outbreak of the Mexican-American War. The final item is an engraving of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in a cartouche made up of an elaborate list of titles and victories in battle.
