Collection Historical Note

Charles Wagamon was born in 1924 and lived in Lewis, Delaware until 1943.  While attending college as a pre-med student he decided to enlist in the U. S. Army.  His experience as a pre-med student resulted in his assignment as a medic.  Mr. Wagamon was sent to Leesville, LA after his basic training in New Cumberland, PA for more medical training.  Shortly after, he went to Arkansas A&M in Jonesboro.  He was scheduled to stay there for three years but was offered a test to become an aviation cadet, designated as a bomber, navigator, or pilot. After passing his initial test, he was sent to Texas A&M in College Station for a semester followed by a trip to San Antonio for additional testing.

Mr. Wagamon traveled to Italy from Norfolk, Virginia after passing his exams.  He was then stationed in Rovereto, Italy where he made reconnaissance runs, watched Germans using the rail system, and collected information for the bombers.  He was in Italy when the war ended.

Mr. Wagamon remained in the military until 1947 to ensure his education would be funded.  Then in 1950, he obtained his pre-med undergraduate degree from the University of North Texas.  His wife, Marion, was attending Texas Women’s University at that time.  Later, he earned his master’s degree from Eastern New Mexico University then moved to Odessa and taught chemistry and physics.

Before moving to Huntsville, Texas in 1978, Mr. Wagamon obtained a PHD in curriculum management from Texas A&M.  He worked at the Education Service Center in Huntsville before retiring.  Afterwards, he and his family operated a printing business in their garage until the late 1990’s.  While living in Huntsville, Mr. Wagamon served as a Walker County judge for over eight years and was a member of the school board after being elected in April 1986.  Mrs. Marion Wagamon was the chairwoman of the English department and English II Honors teacher at Huntsville High School.  She was selected by the State Board of Education to serve on the 1991 State Textbook Subject Area Committee for Language Arts.

On December 12, 2014, Charles and Marion Wagamon were awarded the Benemerenti Medal for 65 years of service to the Catholic Church from Pope Francis.
