Scope and Contents of the Materials

The material in these boxes is made up of the published doctoral dissertation The Sacred Music of Gian Francesco de Majo (1732-1770) by Sheryl Murphy-Manley, mimeograph reproductions of manuscript scores, photocopies of manuscript scores, photocopies of printed scores, photocopies of manuscript letters, photocopies of research texts, bound journal articles, handwritten notes, and provenance correspondences. The scope of these materials dates from the 17th century to the 21st century.

Collection Historical Note

Dr. Sheryl Murphy-Manley was a professor at the School of Music at Sam Houston State University from 2001-2018. She held a bachelor’s degree in music education from SHSU, a master’s degree in conducting from SHSU, and a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Texas. This collection is made up of the reference materials used by Dr. Murphy-Manley in writing her 1996 doctoral dissertation The Sacred Music of Gian Francesco de Majo (1732-1770). It consists mainly of reproductions of the original manuscript scores of Gian Francesco de Majo collected from music conservatories and library archives in Italy, Great Britain and Germany. This collection was created and donated by Dr. Sheryl Murphy-Manley.
