Collection Historical Note

Emmett W. Solomon was born in August 12, 1851 to Reverend John Wesley Solomon and Elizabeth Covington Solomon.  He joined the church at age 8, converted at age 16 and later became a reverend in the Methodist Church. In December 1872, he became a member of the Alabama Conference.  Two years later, in 1874, E. W. Solomon was ordained as deacon.  After two more years, in 1876, Solomon was ordained Elder.

E. W. Solomon was married to Mamie Allen in 1875.  They had six children together.

In 1888, E. W. Solomon was transferred to Houston as a pastor of the Shearn Church.  Pages from the “Texas Conference Methodist Church”, as well as his journal, indicate that he was relocated to various cities in Texas including Huntsville, Texarkana, and Chenango.

E. W. Solomon was honored by church leaders across Texas for seventy-six years as a Methodist minister, coinciding with his 91st birthday.  At the time, it was thought that he held the longest service in comparison to any other Methodist pastors countrywide.  He passed away at his home in Dayton, Texas on September 22, 1942.
