Collection Historical Note

Pleasant Williams Kittrell was born on April 13, 1805 at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina at the age of thirteen, where he graduated, with honors, at seventeen. He pursued his medical training at the University of Pennsylvania, where he left for North Carolina to practice medicine. He married Ann Pegues Evans and moved to Greene County, Alabama. There he continued his medical practice and was later elected to the state legislature.

His first wife died and he was remarried to Mary Frances Goree in 1847. They moved to Madison County and later to Huntsville. He continued to practice medicine in Huntsville and was later elected to the Texas legislature. He also served as chairman of the Education Committee and he used this platform to support the bill for the establishment of the University of Texas.

Kittrell and his wife had six children and two step-children. The yellow fever epidemic swept through Huntsville in 1867. Kittrell became ill with the disease as he treated his patients and died in his home on September 25, 1867.
