Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains materials donated by Oscar Boudreaux, crewmembers, and other members of the USS John W. Thomason DD760 Association. It consists of photos of the battleship, its crew and travels, as well as various memorabilia and items from the ship.

Collection Historical Note

The USS John W. Thomason DD760 is an Allen M. Sumner – class destroyer. It was named for John William Thomson, Jr., after he was awarded the Navy Cross for bravery during World War I while serving as an officer in the United States Marine Corp. The battleship was commissioned by Mrs. John W. Thomason, and launched by Bethlehem Steel Co. in 1944. The USS John W. Thomason conducted many missions across the globe, starting with U.S. missions in San Diego, Seattle, and San Francisco. The ship then traveled to Eastern Asia; patrolling in China, Korea, and Vietnam, where it eventually sank. The destroyer was active in military operations from 1945 -1970. The USS John W. Thomason was awarded 7 Battle Stars for Korean service, and 3 for its service in Vietnam.
