The Jerry W. Davis Wildlife Biologist Materials are comprised of a short biography, correspondence, and publications.

Collection Historical Note

Jerry W. Davis was a Wildlife Biologist for the Sam Houston National Forest. He received his Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology and Masters of Forestry in Wildlife Habitat Management from Stephen F. Austin University, Nacogdoches, Texas. Wildlife experience includes employment with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (1967), U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (1971-1972), Forest Wildlife Biologist – Kaibab National Forest (1972-79), Tonto National Forest (1978-85), and the Sam Houston National Forest (1985-unknown).

Davis has been the sole author of over 30 papers published and presented in over 50 different media including The Journal of Wildlife Management, Proceedings of the Wildlife-Livestock Relationship Symposium, Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, Arizona Wildlife News, Arizona Wildlife Views, Southwest Habitater, Fishing and Hunting News, Sialia, Snag Habitat Management Symposium, and the North American Natural Resources Conference.

Davis has presented over 100 times at the local, state, and national levels. In 1986 he was one of 20 speakers chosen nationwide to speak at the President’s Science Day Program in Washington, D. C.. Some of the thought provoking speeches have included: “Wildlife Why Not?”, “It Is Time”, “Livestock vs Riparian Habitat Management – There Are Solutions”, “Snags Are For Wildlife”, “Fences and Wildlife”, “Wildlife Waters – A Forgotten Necessity”, “Green Alligators and/or Long-neck Geese”, and “Tend My Garden”, to mention a few.
