This collection contains photocopies of a letter written by Jesse Kincaid to Dr. Ashbel Smith.

Collection Historical Note

Dr. Ashbel Smith had a large impact on Texas and medical history. Dr. Smith was born in 1805 and held many offices before his death in 1886. Smith attended medical school at Yale. Upon graduating, he taught briefly in Salisbury, NC, before moving to Paris to treat the cholera epidemic of 1832. He then moved back to Salisbury, NC where he opened his own practice. In 1836, Smith moved to Texas. Shortly after his move, he made a close acquaintance in Sam Houston. Sam Houston appointed Smith Surgeon General for the Republic of Texas. In 1839, Smith treated victims of the Yellow Fever outbreak in Galveston, TX. Upon the stabilization of the epidemic, he proceeded to write the first treatise on Yellow Fever. Smith is also responsible for aiding in the establishment of the first hospital in what is now Houston, TX. Dr. He toured many years in Europe as a diplomat before returning to Texas before the start of the civil war. He was a stout supporter of the secession of Texas, and organized a regiment to fight on the side of the south in the Civil War.  In 1878, he was appointed to the Texas House of Representatives and later in 1881, the University of Texas Board of Regents
