Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains materials donated by Marie Byrne Martinez, a longtime employee of the Newton Gresham Library. It contains a family history, newspaper clippings, and a wedding photograph.

Collection Historical Note

The Martinez family immigrated to Texas in the 1920’s. Jose and Zenobia Martinez were married in 1927, and then moved to Huntsville in the year 1929. Jose was the first Mexican to become a member of the Masonic Lodge of Huntsville. He was responsible for getting many children with severe birth defects care through the Shriner’s Crippled Children Hospital in Houston. Mr. Martinez also worked to establish an independent water company in Huntsville, which was later bought by the City of Huntsville. The Martinez’s were charter members of the first Mexican Baptist church in Huntsville. They also opened the first Mexican restaurant in Huntsville, Martinez Restaurant, which was open until 1981. The Martinez family have had a great impact on the city of Huntsville, and members of the family still reside in Walker County.
