Collection Historical Note

Henderson Yoakum was a Texas historian and lawyer who was born September 6, 1810 in Tennessee. He graduated from West Point in 1832, and went on to serve as a Tennessee senator from 1839-1845. During his time in the senate, Henderson was a stout advocate for the annexation of Texas. In 1845 Yoakum moved to Huntsville, Texas and was granted a law license from The Republic of Texas.  He worked to make Huntsville the county seat of Walker County and helped establish Andrew Female College.  In 1849, Henderson Yoakum was the director of the Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas.  He later wrote History of Texas from Its First Settlement in 1685 to Its Annexation to the United States in 1846. He passed away on November 30, 1856 and Yoakum County, Texas was later named in his honor.
