Collection Overview
Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Don Reid Capital Punishment Collection (1959-1973; three boxes) contains materials which belonged to Don Reid, Jr. concerning his work with capital punishment in Texas. It consists of notes, letters to Mr. Reid, article rough drafts with editor’s notes, capital punishment publications, photos, magazine articles, clippings, and newspapers.
Collection Historical Note
Don Reid was born in Katy, Texas on December 2, 1906. Over his lifetime, Don Reid helped to shape capital punishment and prisons in the State of Texas. Reid worked for The Huntsville Item newspaper from 1937 until 1972. While working for The Item, Don was also a member of the Dallas Associated Press. He received his first assignment from the Associated Press in 1938 – to cover an execution fulfilled by the Texas Department of Corrections. This execution was the first of 189 executions that Don would go on to witness and write about, earning him the nickname "The Death House Reporter". Mr. Reid became a well-known voice for the abolishment of capital punishment. Don was published and written about in various publications, such as Time magazine, Newsweek, The Houston Chronicle, and many more. He worked to make lasting changes to the Texas criminal justice system, including helping to develop Texas’ modern parole system and initiating a rehabilitation program for first time offenders. After retirement, Don published his book “Have a Seat, Please” (formerly known as “Eyewitness”), which continues to be widely read today.
