Sanford Gibbs opened a mercantile store in Huntsville, Texas with his partner Gardner Coffin in 1841.  After Coffin died, Sanford sold part of the business to his brother Thomas Gibbs in the late 1840s.  The Gibbs brothers’ mercantile business sold farming necessities, food, and other general merchandise to the residents of Huntsville and Walker County.  Their business grew into Gibbs National Bank which later became the First National Bank of Huntsville.  The Gibbs family also owns and operates Gibbs Brothers & Company which deals with land, timber, and minerals in and around Walker County.

Edwin G. Sandhop, Jr. was born in Trinity, Texas in 1923 and attended Trinity public schools from 1931 to 1941.  He married Genevieve Westfall in 1942 and then received his BBA from Sam Houston State Teacher’s College in 1949.  Ed Sandhop worked for Gibbs Brothers & Company for 57 years.  He passed away on July 27, 2010 at his home in Huntsville, Texas.
