Arrangement: The collection contains documents, articles, publications, campaign materials, advertisements, audiocassettes, videocassettes, photographs, and correspondence documenting the personal and political life of Robert A. Gammage of Texas. The Robert A. Gammage Collection is divided into three series. The first series contains Robert A. Gammage’s personal materials that include biographical information, personal correspondence, personally authored pieces, educational documents, and legal work. The second series of the collection holds Robert A. Gammage’s professional and political materials. The third series in the collection contains audio visual materials including photographs, audiocassette tapes, VHS cassettes, and oversized political scrapbooks.

Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Robert A. Gammage Collection (1956-2016; fifty five boxes) contains materials relating to the personal life and political career of Robert A. Gammage. These materials include documents, articles, publications, campaign materials, advertisements, audiocassettes, videocassettes, photographs, and correspondence. This collection has educational certificates and documents related to Robert A. Gammage’s formal education. The collection contains many books and publications on past U.S. and Texas political leaders. The majority of the documents in the collection relate to Gammage’s official business as a public servant, including his professional correspondence along with other state and federal information. A large portion of the collection includes campaign correspondence, promotional flyers, posters, and advertisements from Robert A. Gammage’s various campaigns for state and federal public office along with promotional campaign materials for Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Hilary Clinton, John Kerry, Wesley Clark, and Barak Obama. The hundreds of photographs that are part of the collection picture Gammage and his colleagues from the 1960s through the 2000s, showing him with the Texas House of Representatives, Texas Senate, United States Congress, Texas Court of Appeals, and Texas Supreme Court.
Collection Historical Note
Robert “Bob” Gammage was born on March 13, 1938 in Houston, Texas. He was the second of three children born to Paul and Sara Ella Gammage. Bob attended Charles H. Milby High School in Houston from 1953 to 1956. In high school, Gammage was a distinguished football lineman and went on to college with an athletic scholarship. He received his undergraduate degrees from Del Mar College and the University of Corpus Christi which is now Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi. Bob Gammage acquired his Master of Arts Degree from Sam Houston State College in August 1965. He served in the United States Army from 1959 to 1960 and later the United States Navy Reserve. While in the Navy, Gammage reached the rank of Captain. In 1969, he studied at the University of Texas School of Law, obtaining a Doctor of Jurisprudence. He received his Masters of Law (LLM) degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1986.
Bob Gammage was elected to the Texas State House of Representatives in 1971 and served until 1973. As a member of the Texas State House of Representatives, Gammage served on the Criminal Jurisprudence, Juvenile Crime and Delinquency, and Higher Education Committees. Bob Gammage was also a member of the “Dirty 30” bipartisan group of legislators seeking reform in the early 1970s.
In 1973, Gammage was elected as a member of the Texas State Senate. He served in the Texas State Senate until 1976. While a Senate member, he served on numerous committees including Chairman of the Subcommittee of Public Health and Welfare. Gammage was Vice-Chairman of the Subcommittee on Consumer Affairs and the Subcommittee on Criminal Matters.
Bob Gammage was elected as a Democrat to the 95th Congress in 1976, unseating his Republican rival Ron Paul. He served one term in Congress and then was unseated by Ron Paul in 1978. While in Congress, Gammage assisted with the establishment of a Children’s Nutrition Research Center at both St. Luke’s and Texas Children’s Hospitals. Other notable accomplishments included funding of a water immersion weightless training facility at NASA and drilling of an experimental geothermal well in Brazoria County. From 1979 until 1980, Gammage worked as assistant Attorney General of Texas and then as special consultant to the U.S. Department of Energy.
Gammage was elected to the Court of Appeals from central Texas in 1982 and he won re-election in 1988. While with the Court of Appeals, he was a delegate to the first Governor’s Conference on the Judiciary. He also served on the Texas Judicial Council and was chair of Texas Judicial Education Executive Committee.
Bob Gammage was elected to the Texas Supreme Court in November of 1990 and served as a Supreme Court Justice from 1991 until 1995. He retired from the Supreme Court of Texas to practice law and teach at various universities. He was a visiting professor at Sam Houston State University, teaching both Political Science and History. Gammage was given many prestigious awards for his political and educational accomplishments. Those awards included a Presidential Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Civil Rights from the NAACP and the Barbara Jordan Outstanding Public Service Award.
On September 10, 2012, Bob Gammage passed away at his home in Llano, Texas. He was 74 years old. The Robert A. Gammage Collection was donated to SHSU Special Collections by his wife Lynda Hallmark Gammage in February of 2015. Several additional items in the collection were donated by John C. Domino.
