The Ed Davis Collection on the Trinity River (1928-2015; 5 boxes) contains documents, correspondence, magazines, newspapers, and other materials relating to efforts to channelize the Trinity River.  A significant part of the collection is personal notes and drafts of the thesis The Movement for Trinity River Development written by Ed Davis in 1964.  The materials are arranged by format and creator.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Ed Davis Collection on the Trinity River contains many handwritten notes and documents collected by Ed Davis as he wrote his master’s thesis The Movement for Trinity River Development at the University of North Texas in 1964.  The thesis materials include interview notes, rough drafts, and articles concerning the Trinity River and the Trinity Improvement Association.  The collection also includes several Trinity River and Dallas area publications that relate to the history and condition of the Trinity River.  The collection contains many newspaper clippings and correspondence relating to the Trinity River in the late 1930s that were collected and compiled into scrapbooks by John Carpenter and then donated to Edwin Davis by Carpenter’s son, Ben.

Collection Historical Note

Edwin S. Davis

Edwin S. Davis graduated from North Texas State University with a B.A. in Political Science in 1962.  He then received his M.A. in Political Science and Public Administration from North Texas State University in 1964. In 1972, Davis received his Ph.D. in Political Science and Public Administration from Texas Tech University.  Edwin Davis taught for the Political Science department at Sam Houston State University beginning in 1986 until his last class in 2009.  After his retirement from SHSU, he went on to work with local prison ministry.

John W. Carpenter

Many of the newspaper articles and pieces of correspondence were gathered by John W. Carpenter who served on the Trinity River Development Committee under the Dallas Chamber of Commerce.  Carpenter later became President of the Trinity Improvement Association and helped with the formation of the Trinity River Authority.  Ben Carpenter gave his father’s materials to Dr. Ed Davis for his thesis research.
